A Partnership with You and Your Doctor

Tips to help you arrive prepared

Tips for Getting your Best Glasses or Contacts Prescription

1. Avoid Squinting - When trying to see the letters on an eye chart it is natural to want to squint and put pressure on the cornea with the eyelid. This can alter the final result in the wrong direction. One should keep the eyes wide open throughout.

2. Let the Doctors Know When It’s Perfect - The doctors will want to know if you can see the letters in sharp clear focus. If you know what the letters are or can still make them out when they are blurry, simply reading them back correctly could affect the outcome of the exam. If you have any trouble at all seeing the letters, let the doctor know.

3. Give the Best Answer when Neither Choice is Clear - Some tests will be intentionally blurry and one will have to choose the better of the two choices when neither one is giving perfect vision. If it is difficult to tell which is better you can ask to see them again.

4. Avoid Tilting the Head to One Side - This is a natural tendency that can make the eyes seem to line up on the same plane in the machine when they actually do not. Some have been able to peek around the occluder to see with their dominant eye when the weaker eye is the one being tested (it is difficult, but not impossible!).

5. Disclose All Relevant Medical Information - Before the test we try to determine if there are any other health conditions a patient has that can affect vision, in particular diabetes and thyroid conditions. Failure to disclose these conditions is a common reason that exams and glasses have to be done again.

6. Bring the Old Pair of Glasses - Before each exam we get a reading on the older pair of glasses to see what power you have been wearing. We get a lot of useful information from these and it also helps to know how old the glasses are and whether or not you have difficulty functioning with them.
